Rube Goldberg Machines are a fascinating collection of whimsical machines that accomplish an all too simple task, and there have been several games for the iOS that have taken this theme and built from it challenging puzzles. Whether moving drops from one place to another in Enigmo, or building Crazy Machines, There is no lack for these games in the mobile space. Why would Rovio, king of all things Angry, choose this as there next big endeavor?

Amazing Alex is a puzzle game where you must complete a machine that performs some convoluted task like getting balls into a laundry hamper, or popping a ballon through a series of chain reactions. The puzzles are usually partially done, and you must provide the correct orientation of the missing pieces. Each level also contains three stars (where have we seen those before?) which you must collect through the activation of the machine to truly complete the puzzle.

Speaking of which, the entire interface will remind you have Angry Birds, with its sidebar, and paging levels. There are one hundred and twelve levels to be completed, but Even that is not all in store. Not only does Amazing Alex have a built in level editor for making your own crazy contraptions, but there is also a wealth of user created level to enjoy online. You can even submit your levels.

For those of your that don’t follow the iOS gaming news I will point out that Amazing Alex is not an original game. Rovio purchased the rights to an iPad game called Casey’s Contraptions and then polished the graphics and added a few more levels. For those of your that already own the original, there may not be any reason to buy Alex right now. In the future though, you might find yourself wanting to buy as I am sure Rovio has many more updates in store like their previous game.

Amazing Alex is a nice puzzle game with clean graphics and a fun mechanic that will either level you scratching your head, or laughing as the mechanism falls into place flawlessly. This isn’t a heavyweight game by any means and will appeal to the same gaming crowd as its angry bird brethren. That is, practically everyone!

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Easy.

Who Is It For:Casual gamers.

What I Like:Easy controls, and Imaginative puzzles.

What I Don't Like:Initial levels are quite short.

Final Statement:Don't get Angry, just get Alex!
