Rovio’s Angry Birds have been hogging the limelight for too damn long. Yes, the series may appeal to people who enjoy absent-minded trial-and-error gameplay, but Rovio are clearly a reasonably talented bunch of developers who could afford to be a little more ambitious. Amazing Alex offered this, but at the expense of endearing visuals and memorable characters.

Thankfully, the hitherto under-represented antagonists of Angry Birds have come along to save the day. Bad Piggies puts players in the shoes (or just faces) of the green pigs that you killed so many of. Rather than just stealing bird eggs however, it seems that the piggies are considerably more inventive than the birds, as you create all manner of vehicular contraptions in which you guide the pigs through various obstacle courses.

The objective in Bad Piggies is to create a vehicle – using all sorts of pumps, fans, wheels, TNT, you-name-it – in which you try to get your piggy to the finish line. Each level allows you to win up to three stars, which can be achieved by all sorts of bonus tasks, such as collecting star crates, finishing the level in a certain amount of time, or getting the pig to the finish line with the vehicle intact.

The campaign spans hundreds of levels (with more on the way) and there is also a sandbox mode to play around. The presentation of the game is, as expected, brilliant, and the plethora of goofy noises the pigs make will bring a smile to your face.

Whether it will be more popular than Angry Birds is doubtful, but Bad Piggies is a more original and intelligent game overall, forcing the player to show a bit of inventiveness rather than mindlessly hurling things at other things. Also, the piggies seem considerably more amicable and intelligent than their avian enemies. Seeing things from their side really makes you see them in a whole new light.

We rate this app 4.5 out of 5 stars.
