The Most Exciting iPhone App Update EVER!!

By danc - Posted on 06 May 2009

Okay, that title might be a tiny bit of an exaggeration... but not by much.

Seriously, it felt like a relatively slow iPhone app week thus-far but this particular iPhone app update has changed all that for me.

It MADE the week app-wise! Seriously.

I'm not joking.

I'm not joking about this next part either...

Before you read any further go to QuickVoice and purchase the app for $.99.

I'm actually quite serious.

If we have earned any degree of trust here on WOiP TRUST ME NOW!!!! BUY THIS APP.

(Disclaimer- I/we have absolutely NO association with them whatsoever. This is an app I personally bought for myself and I have had no contact with the developer.)

Why should you buy it??? Let me tell you.

Voice to text has come a long way. Jott and reQall work well to take short dictation and transcribe them to text. The accuracy is, overall, quite good.

Google Voice offers free transcription of voicemail. Here too, the accuracy is, overall, quite good.

The ONLY thing holding me back from going Google Voice full-time is the fact that I have been using SpinVox for the past few months and ITS transcription quality is AWESOME.

So tonight I see that there is an update available for QuickVoice. "No biggee" I think to myself. Then I see what it says...

First thought," there you go... no more free desktop software... nice!"

Second thought, "Wow, voice to text, I wonder if it will actually works?"

THEN I see THIS...

"You know, I think to myself, if SpinVox is doing the transcription it might actually be decent."

So I update the app on my iPhone, start a new voice note, hold the iPhone a good distance from my mouth and speak. I select the option to have it transcribed and I send it to myself.

And I wait.
And I wait.
And I begin to wonder if it will actually arrive in my inbox.

Then it arrives... AND THE TRANSCRIPTION IS PERFECT!!! (It even includes the points where I mispoke.)

I told you, I wasn't kidding. This app is the holy grail of voice-notes and, right now, it is $.99. I have a hard time imagining they will be able to keep the transcription service free for very long but for now... this is amazing!

I just got the app this morning and have been trying it out. Was anyone else surprised by the 30 second limit for voice to text emailing? Anyone know if that limit will be increased at some point.
I use QuickVoice to record various things and have enjoyed the free version up to now. The voice-to-text emailing feature was what made me take the plunge. My initial tests are showing that it works well but I was a bit bummed to find out about the time limit. Still a cool app that is potentially highly functional for times when I'm away from my notebook.

The app records fine, and when I tap the email icon, I select 'Emaul Recording as Text', the email page appears showing *.caf file, However, the 'Send' button is not operative...and that's it!

The key is providing an actual email address in the FROM field not just [FROM:ME] or something like that.

you must enter an email address in the To; field.....then the send button will enable

I can't get it to send emails either.  I enter a valid email address and the send button never enables.  Has anyone else seen this issue?

Add an email address in the FROM field. That's it.

I can feel the excitement, here! Buy how is this any better than the free ReQall app, which has tons more features?

It is a great question... here is my, possibly not so great, answer.

I love reQall and have a pro account. I use it a good deal. It is super powerful and, once you get to know the system, VERY useful. Therein lies the rub. It isn't as simple as, start record, email... it takes more thought to use it than that. This is... start, record, email. It is straightforward, simple and, sic eit is SpinVox, dead on accurate. And, at least right now, just $.99!!!

Is it a replacement for reQall? Not for me. Is it a keeper along side reQall. Yes. At least for me.

Hey Dan,

Great tip. I followed your advice, and I'm loving the application; the desktop companion pulls recordings out of my iTunes iPhone backup, which isn't clear from the product description, but is a useful extra, especially for long meeting recordings.

I used the app to record an email to the developer to request a desktop code, and the email that was sent was word perfect. Not sure I'll ever type an email again!

I've even been lucky enough to be able to register the desktop app on both a pc and a Mac - what more could you want?!

My only observation is the files are on the large-ish side, even having tweaked the recroding rate via Settings/QuickVoice Pro.

That said, I can't fault the operation.

Bruce-

Really glad you like it. I hit "post" last night and held my breath a bit. Not used to putting my "app credibility" (however mch there is or isn't) on the line to such a great extent BUT I was so impresed that I figured it was worth the risk.

The other thing that is really nice about the app is that the developer/s seem like really good folks. After it posted he emailed me and we've had a chance to exchange a few since and, once again, great app from good people. Always nice when those two go together.

I bought it and sent myself an email.  Interested to see what comes back.

And the other problem I have -- QuickVoice Pro recordings take up so much space.
30 seconds = 1 megabyte!
Why? You don't need that much space for good fidelity.

KimH-

If you go to setting you can change the recording quality. the smallest size available is 8kHz and the largest is 44.1kHz. That is going to give VERY different sized files.

At the highest quality 30 seconds is a wopping 2.5mb. At the lowest, though it is 462kb

I recorded a message, and sent in in for transcription. Hours ago. Haven't gotten anything back at all.
Not impressed.

Weird. I just did three and they came back much faster than I even expected. Oh, and they were totally accurate.

OK Bought it on your advice as I already had the free old version but this is awesome. Got the free desktop one too. Sent myself a very long email and it got it 100% correct including punctuation. Worth every penny. I must try saying Enter to see if it will drop down a line. After saying "Hello Me" it would be cool if it dropped tot he next line to start the body of your email. Same with the Regards etc at the end. Don't forget the xxxxxx at the end when you email yourself. ;0)

You had better be right :)

Actually I am rather keen to try it out when I get out of here (work)
