New In The App Store: Slacker Radio - Updated
Choice is good and the choices for getting internet radio on your iPhone just got better with the release of Slacker Radio for the iPhone.
The Slacker Radio App gives access to the entire Slacker music library. That means millions of songs from thousands of artists all streamed (but not stored) right through your iPhone.
With the app you can listen to over 100 expert programmed radio stations or create your own custom stations directly on the iPhone.
After creating a Slacker Radio account right on my iPhone (it took seconds) the app quickly loaded a list of stations. The layout is nice and rather convenient.you can choose music base on genre, a general search, pre-selected favorites ot the "Slacker Spotlight".
Stations start quickly, the sound quality is quite good, the interface is refined and the app is quite stable.
As you might expect from other apps of this kind, you can select stations as favorites, get album details, and purchase music on iTunes right from the iPhone.
Like Pandora, Slacker's music licensing means you can only skip six songs per station per hour. That's annoying but it isn't their fault. One thing I like very much is the fact that a small counter at the bottom of a station's screen let's you know how many skips you have left.
The graphics of the app are certainly unique but ultimately it seems to offer the same selection of music as Pandora and Last.fm. There's nothing earthshaking here but, then again, choice is always a good thing. The ability to upgrade to Slacker Radio Plus for $3.99/month and get, among other things, unlimited skips and even more song customization is a really nice option. More info can be found HERE.
You can get the Slacker Radio app HERE in the App Store for free.

I received a Sirius receiver for Christmas this year and have been very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the service and the selection. But now that Slacker is offering a premium subscription with skip and request features, I'm wondering how long I'm going to enjoy paying a $13 monthly premium for what is starting to look like a slightly inferior service (save Howard and BBC1).
I also use FStream for pulling in a few select internet radio stations' URLs, AOL Radio for KROCK2, and have dabbled in Last.fm, Pandora. They're all worth a place on Page 2; nothing too too bad to say about any of them. They all have a tendancy to repeat after a 2 hour listening session, so if you're plugged in at work, you'll want to swap out after a while. Music is the one category where I'm happy to carry several around at once.
Well, I used the app before my game tonight. It worked very well on the Edge network. Wow! The UI is great. There are huge numbers of channels. This is similar to having xm/sirius. The deal breaker for me is the two comedy channels. I love listening to stand up comedy. This app is going to get some work from me! I am keeping Pandor next to it to keep my options open.
Dan, would you recommend adding slacker radio as an addition to Pandora? I currently like using Pandora, but wonder if the channels are set up differently on this app. I have I heart Radio also, but use that mainly to listen to some talk show stuff, not music. What do you think? Is it worth to add to Pandora?
