Back in December we took a look at a fairly comprehensive toolkit that provided calculators and reference material for engineers and hobbyists alike. The boys at SycLabs reached out to tell us that there has been an update to the Electronic Engineering Toolkit Pro app, and so lets take a look at what has been improved and what new things we can find.

Right off the bat we have a new page labeled component references. This is mainly a collection of data sheets for many popular ICs and microcontrollers. There are also data sheet references for surface mounted devices which is especially helpful for the hobbyist that may not have to deal with these tiny components very often. Each reference page has summary information as well as links to the PDF data sheets themselves. This can be a double edged sword as this allows changes to the data sheets to be updated seamlessly without needing to update the app. On the other hand, if you need to access these data sheets away from an internet connection, you will be out of luck. Outside of this new page there is also a new decibel calculator and a ppm calculator.

Apart from the new tools, the toolkit has many improvements such as a setting to turn off the default backgrounds in case you found them too busy. The only choice is a shade of grey, but it does help tone down some of the calculator pages. The keyboard has also undergone a makeover to help make it easier to use.

In my review I found the Electronic Engineering Toolkit Pro to be a must have for those that wield the soldering iron. This update hasn’t changed that at all, and instead, brought a modest increase in the number of tools at your disposal. Most companies would be content with simple bug fixes, but this update shows that SycLabs is committed to make the EET app the most comprehensive engineering app on the app store. Owners of the previous version can update right now for free, while those of you that are just hearing about this app can pick it up for only $3.99

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:If you don't know anything about electronics, then you will be lost.

Who Is It For:Professional electronic engineers and hobbyists.

What I Like:Fast loading, and large number of tools.

What I Don't Like:Some tools a bit too utilitarian.

Final Statement:The boys at Syclabs continue to make this a must have app for anything that works with electronic components.

Read the Developer's Notes:
