Final Draft Writer – Review – THE screenwriting software for iPad, finally!
App Type: Productivity
For those unaware, Final Draft is the primary screenwriting software that is used in Hollywood and elsewhere and it retails for about $200 for Mac. Earlier, the company released Final Draft Reader for iPad intended to help those reading scripts (perhaps the actors), but not those writing them. Now, there is a piece of iPad software - Final Draft Writer – that lets people edit their manuscripts in Final Draft format on the go.
While the version for the iPad does not contain the depth of features that the full version, there is more than enough for last minute changes on the set. It’s easy to scroll through script pages using the standard swipe motion.
Scripts can be e-mailed, printed using AirPrint, imported from iTunes or saved to DropBox from the app. A writer can also place notes to him/herself on the page (in the form of a red exclamation point, usually appearing as a pop-up window if tapped on). From the full version of Final Draft, you can set a Title Page, use SmartType lists, create revisions and lock pages. You can also choose to use letter or legal-sized paper for your scripts.
This software is not for the amateur screenwriter. However, for the novice there is an online help file accessible from the main screen of the app.
Final Draft Writer is priced as of this writing at $30 and will go up to $50 in October. This is software for the serious screenwriter. There are other options in the App Store for those who simply play with script-writing as a hobby.
