There is an insatiable hunger for mass-scale conflict in all of us. Not that many of us actually want the world to be blighted by war and destruction, but there is something about being in control of a large military force that’s infinitely appealing, and Great Big War Game lets you act out your conflict-based fantasies in the most colourful and harmless possible way.

Great Big War Game is a turn-based war game. The single-player campaign sees you working your way through over 50 missions of increasing difficulty. The game sees you control troops over land, sea and air, as you’re given specific targets to take out, bases to capture and enemy forces to outright annihilate.

The game has a charming bubblegum look, but that shouldn’t make you complacent and think that this is a kids game. Sure, kids can play it, but the level of strategy involved can really run quite deep, as you fight for strategic high ground points, try to collect power-ups before enemies, and use the correct troop types to do the most damage to your enemies.

The game is underlined by a sense of humour that most fans of army-based films – from the classical Hollywood era right up to the modern day – will fondly recognise. In this sense, the game also recalls the humour of the legendary top-down shooter Cannon Fodder (the young ‘uns may not recognise this name), which was one of the first games to infuse the war game genre with outright silliness.

The real fun in GBWG, however, comes with the multiplayer element, which is catered for in a variety of ways. You can partake in online skirmishes through Pass ‘n’ Play and Skirmish modes, and the only thing that could really improve this aspect of the game would be the option to play against several people simultaneously. One to consider for a future patch, perhaps?

GBWG is the most fun turn-based strategy game currently available on Android. Maybe if someone pulled it together to release a strong version of Civilization for the platform then it wouldn’t be, but for now, this is without a doubt the best way to satisfy your military conquest needs on Android.
