Ever tried to flick through a cookbook with your arm halfway up a turkey? Not much fun, right? Well, icookbook could be the cooking solution you’ve been waiting for!

iCookbook has a voice command option, which I thought was a brilliant idea. It took a bit of getting used to, and my dogs got kinda confused watching me shout “back!” “BACK!” at no one, but it is a fun, useful feature. Publications International has already sold 9 million cookbooks, so making a move to the ipad seems only natural. They’ve given it a lot of thought. Apart from the voice command option, they’ve thought of pretty much everything: there are over 2000 tried and tested recipes, a monthly update, an online sharing option, and you can put your favorites, or your family’s secret recipes, in the Recipe Box. You can check by ingredients, cuisine, dish, theme, brand, or occasion (Valentine’s Day).

The app looks awesome, and it makes me hungry every time I start it up. I’d have liked additional pictures in the recipe, just to clarify the tricky bits. I was surprised by the product placement, – why would I use French’s mustard rather than any other brand? – but I guess that’s how they normally make their money. Still, in a paid app, they seem to be cashing in on both sides. And it’s kinda expensive, at $3.99. You do get monthly updates for that. Other than that: loved it!
