Apple does it again!  The final application in the iLife suite has been ported from the Mac to the iPad and iPhone.  Granted, it’s a somewhat toned-down version comparatively but it’s offered at a fraction of the cost.

For those unaware, iPhoto allows the user to organize their photographs and make minor edits and corrections on them.  The features aren’t quite as flexible and numerous as those on Adobe Photoshop Touch (for example, this app doesn’t have layers), but it’s enough to correct red-eye or crop a photo or do basic editing.

Not to say that the features on iPhoto aren’t impressive.  You can do detailed labeling and characterization of a photo.  You can share it on a variety of online services such as Facebook and Twitter.  The feature I found most impressive (and rarely seen in other photography apps) is the ability to “beam” a photo from one iDevice to another provided both are on the same network and have iPhoto installed.  It’s synchronization without the need for wires.

iPhoto is not simple to use and takes a little while to learn, but once learned you can do a lot with it.  It helps that the company that created the app also created the devices that it should be used on.  The interface is near perfect.  You can sharpen, lighten, darken, erase, rotate and do many other basic edits to your Photo Library.  There is a help button that leads to a help section for those who get lost.

Apple has once again created a fantastic app (one of the few which I rate a perfect “5”).  Given the excellent cameras that are now embedded in both the iPhone and new iPad, this app is practically a must-have.
