With an average game price of somewhere between a dollar and two dollars, why would anyone splurge seven bucks on a game in the App Store even with the name of a popular, current movie attached?  Well, the game is that good.

This game is as close to a PS3 or XBox game as the processing power of an iPhone or iPod touch will allow.  It has excellent graphics, an actual storyline and uses the voices of the movie actors so it’s not just a case of reading some text dialogue on a screen.  It even plays the "I Am Iron Man" theme song from the movie.  The app also has my favorite feature of being able to play your music library in the background.

The story itself is fairly simple.  Tony Stark is attending his Stark Expo convention when some sort of enemy attacks with an army of robot drones (some of which I refer to as "spider tanks" because that’s what they look like).  Under instruction from the computer Jarvis, Iron Man is supposed to fly around New York City (yes, the game operates in three dimensions) as well as other locations and either defeat the robot enemies or diffuse bombs.  It does get a bit redundant, but it’s easy to marvel (no pun intended) at the detail of the game.  In later levels, you can choose between the Iron Man or War Machine armors.

If I had one complaint, it would be the high price.  The game is very well done for such a low-powered operating system and the hype behind the movie no doubt is driving the initial cost up, but if you wait long enough, the price will go down.  The game feels more like $4.99 than $6.99.  Despite this, it is much better than it’s Iron Man: Aerial Assault predecessor.

If price is no object, then this one is recommended.  Just be prepared to wait for a long download.  With all the multimedia involved, the file size is huge.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Most likely.

Learning Curve:Low to Medium.

Who Is It For:Iron Fans and portable gamers.

What I Like:Almost everything. The graphics. The sound. The story.

What I Don't Like:The price. It's a little high by my standards.

Final Statement:You don't have to be Tony Stark to play this game, but it would probably help you afford it.

Read the Developer's Notes:
