Localscope couldn’t possibly have had a better name as it does exactly what the name says – helps to explore the local areas. Ask anything you could think, about your surroundings and Localscope is here with the answer. Anything from sharing your location or finding the nearest gas station to seeing the latest local tweets, this app doesn’t spare anything.

The homescreen shows options to either Search for a particular entity or Discover recommended areas. Settings of the app and basic Location info can also be accessed from here. The green discover button opens into a huge pile of sources to access your neighborhood data. Sources include nearby photos from Panoramio, Instagram, Flickr & Picasa and videos from YouTube. Social networking is not left out with Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare integration. Other location based sites and apps like Yelp, CitySearch, Wikimapia and GoogleLocal are also available.

On the other hand, the blue search button helps you to find the nearest restaurant or bank or anything of that sort. Just like its discover counterpart, search are also includes numerous sources like Yelp, Foursquare, Wikimapia and GoogleLocal. In any page, we have the option to visit the results as pictures, on maps or as Augmented Reality representation. The AR mode is really interesting and works perfectly well (reminds me of the new Nokia Lumia Ads portraying similar feature called Nokia city Lense). Toggling and sorting your favorite sources is also easy with the simple interface.

Please keep in mind that this is not a navigation system to help you drive but just a tool to explore new areas. With the help of a large number of popular sources, Localscope covers almost the entire globe and can be handy during those tours abroad. Even with the iOS 6 3D maps and the Google Maps web app in the horizon, Localscope clearly beats everything we have ever laid our eyes on. To conclude, Localscope is 2 bucks well invested!
