Mikey Shorts is the Super Mario for iOS and nothing can describe the game better than this. You might know this game from before as it is a quite popular title, receiving 750+ 5-star ratings in the past one year. Now, the developers have come forward with their season special – Mikey Shorts Halloween.

First let me break it to you that this game is not scary, in any sense of the word. Not a deal breaker though, because it has lots of petrified spirits, zombie bots and lightning pillars. In this land of the undead, only Mikey Shorts is awake and he has to free all the spirits.

The game is an entertaining 2D platform where Mikey can move forward or backward and jump or slide to avoid obstacles. Each level is locked into different segments by lightning pillars. As you move along, you can collect gold coins and slide over zombies to kill them. Touch the petrified souls to set them free and each freed soul amounts to your energy bar. Once you have full energy, you can break the lightning pillars and enter the next segment. Break the last pillar and the level is yours. For high scores, finish the game in the least time.

Unfortunately this game has only 4 levels and the gameplay time is only about 15 min. It makes you want more (exactly what the developers have in mind). The game sports a ghost mode (the only spooky thing) where you can race against your own High Score ghost. Similarly, split times are shown on reaching each pillar. All these features can be toggled according to your needs in the settings menu. A huge number of costumes are also available for Mikey so that he can dress for the occasion.

Although the controls are super effective on the iPhone, I felt that they were too small and close together on the iPad. You will surely tap the wrong button and slip through the blocks.
Another major drawback I felt while playing this game was the nature of level failure. The first two levels don’t have any endless pits or enemies and you are literally immortal. In the next two levels, pits do appear, but once you fall in, neither lives are lost nor are points negated. You just continue from the previous point. This robs you of a lot of fun while playing this game. I jumped into the oblivion a dozen times, just for fun! This makes me presume that the game was developed with toddlers in mind.

On the whole, the game wins a thumbs up especially after I discovered a hidden area in the first level. This made the game much more interesting and I assume that such areas are present in other levels too.
