We’ve all played Doodle Jump back in the day when iOS devices first hit the market. It was a pioneer in iOS games and one that quickly rose to much popularity. Cute graphics, and a simple game play system that merely involved advancing upwards? It was no wonder the concept was such a hit. Needless to say, clones of the genre quickly spawned and here we have on our hands another game attempting to join the fray.

Mr. Crab, a seemingly random name for an equally random game. Gameplay involves moving vertically upwards, dodging obstacles and collecting bonuses. Sounds cliche enough?

Thankfully the game adds in a significant difference to set itself apart from its competition and add a flair of uniqueness to it. For one, instead of an automatically bouncing character, players have to control and time their jumps by tapping on the screens of their devices. Also, instead of using the accelerometer to tilt the character around, the game features multiple stages of spiraling towers that rotate automatically for the player to jump around on. A novel concept, indeed.

I must say I did enjoy myself playing this game as compared to the numerous other clones out on the App Store.

However, the game does raise a few eyebrows with the choice of level designs. With an app name like Mr. Crab, one would expect an oceanic based theme to stay constant throughout the game. Granted yes, the game did have a few aquatic themed stages, but it left me wondering what a crab would be doing trying to scale a forest. I didn’t like the 3D based graphics than made the game rather difficult to navigate around, and if that was the intent of the developers to make levels harder to complete then I must say they did their jobs well.

All in all, for $1.99, there are many different other apps out there available for a  lower price or even free that place better in the terms of gameplay. However, Mr. Crab is still great nonetheless and I would recommend it to those who have the extra cash.
