iPhone Applications Released Early?

By

On

Two pieces of news caught our eyes today.

First there was this– a post over at TUAW entitled “iPhone 2.0 firmware release date hidden under our noses”. It notes that the original iPhone3G press release clearly stated the release date of the new iPhone firmware. It stated–

"iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes(R) 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers…"

This a huge deal  because this is the firmware that gives the keys to unlocking the hidden potential of the iPhone by bringing all sorts of app goodness to the iPhone.

Since the iPhone 2.0 firmware went gold master last Friday, however, it begs the question- is July 11th the actual release date or is July 11th the latest release date?  Could we possibly see it this week? Hmmmmm.

Then there is this bit of news–

Food Apps Reviewed By A “Foody”- We Welcome Elana

By

On

We know that among the first new apps coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch are cool little food-related native programs like Chef and GroceryZen.

When it comes to food the best things I make are… reservations.

Clearly the right person to review food, shopping, menu and restaurant apps is a true "Foody".

That why we are excited to welcome Elana to What’s On iPhone.

A die-hard “foody”, Elana is a graduate of the Natural Gourmet Institute for Food and Health. As a culinary consultant specializing in natural/whole/organic foods, Elana works one-on-one with individuals and families who are challenged with dietary restrictions and/or food allergies and those just wishing to eat healthier.

Elana will be reporting on all food related iPhone applications- from menus and shopping lists to diets and restaurant guides.  As our resident “guru” she will opine about her likes and dislikes as they pertain to, what we believe will no doubt be, the deluge of apps for both enlightened gastronomists and uninformed home cooks.

Elana will also be sharing her journey as newbie iPhone user (beginning July 11th).  Her past devices have included the Star-Tac (her favorite flip phone), Blackjack, Nokia and every Palm available (her hands-down favorite PDA).

iPhone One Year Later: A Tip Of The Hat To You, Mr. Jobs

By

On June 30, 2008

I spent a good deal of the time in the car alone this morning so I decided to "geek out" a bit and listen to Steve Jobs introducing the iPhone during his keynote at MacWorld Expo 2007. I figured it would be a good way to celebrate the iPhone’s one year anniversary.

And there it was- we may not have realized it then but just seconds into introducting the iPhone Jobs put the roadmap for it right in front of us.

A year later it is clear that we have travelled the EXACT ROAD HE PLANNED FOR US.

Here are the two excerpts that jumped out at me-

…today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products of this class. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device. So, three things: a widescreen iPod with touch controls; a revolutionary mobile phone; and a breakthrough Internet communications device. An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator. An iPod, a phone … are you getting it? These are not three separate devices, this is one device, and we are calling it iPhone. Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone, and here it is…

From the very beginning Jobs made it clear that the iPhone isn’t really a phone. Sure it is, in part, a phone, but from the very beginning Jobs made it clear that “phone” was only one small component of the device. It was, and remains, the first mainstream mini-internet device/handheld computer and that distinction is only going to grow in the months ahead.

The Best Things Come To Those Who Wait

By

On

Even knowing that the 3g iPhone announcement was imminent I decided that £169 was too good resist and I was the first customer of the day in my local store on the day that Apple reduced the price.  And I have been very pleased with that decision – it’s just incredible!

The interface is fantastic and the best feature for me is the browser. It is by far and away the best mobile browser I have ever used. Compared to Safari on the Nokia E90 it is a completely different world. The way the iPhone’s Safari handles scrolling and zooming is fantastic and the speed to load is like nothing I’ve experienced on a mobile device before.

Where my E90 will often fall down and fail to get me into certain web sites, my hosting control panel for instance, the iPhone sails through and loads the pages perfectly and quickly. I don’t think I’ve come across a single website that the iPhone can’t handle and in terms of speed the iPhone on GPRS will give the E90 a run for its money on HSDPA when loading a heavy website.

Text input on the iPhone is also superb, which is really surprising considering the absence of any kind of hardware keyboard! The on screen keyboard is very well done and the auto-correcting software is the really clever part – this allows me to type on the iPhone really very quickly. Coming from a die-hard QWERTY-keyboard-phone guy (who has owned every Nokia Communicator since the 9000, and a load of Windows Mobile QWERTY phones), that might be surprising!

There are, though, a couple of areas where it shows that this is Apple’s first attempt at a phone.

What’s On iPhone Goes Global- We Welcome Simon Dale

By

On

One of the big differences when the 3G iPhone rolls out in a few weeks compared to last year’s is initial iPhone release is that it will be an international event this time around.

On July 11th the 3G will launch in at least 22 countries. In the weeks and months that follow that number will quickly rise to more than 70.

That’s why we are especially glad to welcome Simon Dale to What’s On iPhone. Simon knows his stuff when it comes to mobile tech and has a list of previous phones and devices as long as your arm to prove it. And, since he hails from the UK, Simon just turned What’s On iPhone into a global effort .

Simon, a ‘tech-entrepreneur", has been working in IT for over 10 years. Having always been interested in mobile tech, Simon started off selling Psion organisers on the web during High School and was the first kid in his school with a mobile phone- a Motorola StarTak.  Since then Simon has worked in IT Project Management for some big-name companies and has run a successful IT business for the past 5 years.

Currently iPhone-less (having gotten the jump on the soon-to-explode-slightly-used-first-gen-iPhone market), that will change in just a few weeks!

We welcome Simon and look forward to his posts and reviews!
