Are you the sort that counts the days until the next Academy Awards? Do you have the complete list of winners since its inception memorized in alphabetical order? Then this might be the app for you.
Seriously, Awards Hero – Oscar Edition is basically an app for movie buffs. The interface is pretty cool in which various images from Oscar contenders are arranged in a quilt pattern. The app has the list of nominees in every category along with the posters and trailers for said movies. There is also a news feed from hollywood.com and a historical look of nominees (with the winners highlighted) since the first Academy Awards in 1927.
However, the real meat of this application is the ability to use social networking (specifically Facebook) to enter a pool with your online friends for guessing the winners. Now, money is not a factor in the application. Actual gambling is not involved. That has to be done somewhere else. However, you might win the pride of guessing the most correct Oscar winners before the television ceremony on February 27th and really impress your online buddies.
All the data is kept locally, so no worries about needing an Internet connection except to share your guesses. My only minor complaint is that a search capability would be nice for the Academy history so one doesn’t have to scroll all the way down to find the winner (it was "Wings").
If you’re an Academy buff, this would be a good app for you. If not, then wait for the next big fantasy football app. It’s pretty much the same concept.
