Blackbeard’s Assault Is a highly refined, well done, and well priced arcade game. Think of it as a Zuma on speed — on your iPhone.

It is an excellent game that, like Cronk, brings the Zuma experience to the iPhone. But there are some significant differences between the two games. First of all, this game offers you not one, but three ways of shooting cannonballs This makes the game more interesting but also more complex, and, for some reason I couldn’t quite put a finger on, less enjoyable at times. Perhaps it is the fact that there was so much going on in the screen at one time that I wasn’t able to focus on any one thing.

The game course along which the train of cannibals flows is more complex than that which is found in either Zuma or Cronk, and the speed with which it moves is much faster. The result is a more intense, and at times for me personally, less enjoyable experience then similar games.

One of the things I especially appreciated about this game was the inclusion of "colorblind mode". Colorblind mode makes it easier for those of us who are color deficient to tell the difference between the different colored spheres that are moving along the path. Love it!! Once I set it the subtle color differences became obvious and even someone like me no longer had a problem figuring out which piece to shoot where.

I’m going to be picky here but it was with this particular game that I finally realized what had been bugging me about a number of the games that are currently being developed for the iPhone. I know games need some story line these days, I get that, but I hate when the story line becomes so prominent that it consumes time between levels. Do I really need a graphic of a gate slowly being lowered, screens about pirates I have no interest in, and then the gate opening again before I can keep playing? Listen, if I clear a level just say, "Congrats… here is your score… next level!"  As I said, I know it’s picky, but after a while that delay just gets to me.

In all, Blackbeard’s Assault is a well done, refined game that will likely hold your interest for quite some time. At a cost of just $2.99  it is a good value to boot.
