In a world of various free news programs, such as those for the AP and the New York Times, it takes some serious chutzpah to charge $1.99 for content that one could read online for free.  You’d think CNN was acting with extreme arrogance, particularly consider that it offers a separate CNNMoney application for free.  Fortunately, it offers some extras that may be worth the price.

One of the "killer" aspects of the application is the ability to send one of CNN’s patented "iReports" from the field.  This is when anybody can pre-tape an opinion segment and send it in for the network to play on their show or website.

But the most important "killer" part of this app is the ability to stream live CNN as it is being broadcast.  It is like having the network right on your iPhone or iPod Touch without paying for the cost of cable TV.  That, my friend, is worth the price of admission.  No wonder CNN charges a fee for this app.  Obviously, one needs a WiFi or data connection (preferably WiFi) in order to watch it live.

Naturally, as with other news apps, there are text news articles as well for those who don’t have the patience to watch television anymore.  The sections are divided into the same categories as on the website and it is possible to bookmark any article and send it via e-mail to someone.

As a news junkie, I can’t find anything wrong with this app.  For the $1.99 investment, you certainly get your money’s worth.  If only other cable networks followed suit.  (Please note: This app has has advertisements.)
