User Rating:Technically, this is not a review of the Comixology comic book reading app. Rather, this is a review of The Walking Dead #1 comic that is available on iTunes for free which happens to be wrapped in the Comixology application. I have already written about the future of comic books and this is just another example of it.
Comixology specializes in selling creator-owned comics (such as Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead) and other certain ones. For those who are unaware, The Walking Dead is a tale of the survivors of a zombie apocalypse. In the first issue, the reader is introduced to Officer Rick Grimes who was shot in the line of duty and wakes up in the hospital after the cataclysm. He remains the main character in the story but future issues introduce other supporting characters.
The app itself is pretty simple to use. You tap on each side of the screen to go forward or back. You tilt the device for a portrait or landscape view of the panel. You can even tap the bottom to get to settings. If you’re a comic book enthusiast, you can tap the "buy it in print" button in the settings to find comic shops in your area (the exact same functionality of the comic book locator).
It should be noted that the paid version of Comixology comes with several comics (over 100 for $1.99). While the app itself cannot download more comics, you can download more comics contained within the same program in the App Store. The Walking Dead is a great comic (and soon to be a series on AMC). Between that, the price and the comic shop locator, it’s worth the download.
Pros: Good layout. Free. Comic shop locator.
Cons: Should be able to download other comics for a fee into the same app.
