The final game in the trilogy of Don Bluth animated arcade games from the 80’s has finally hit the iPhone. Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace are now joined by Dragon’s Lair 2: Time Warp.

In sheer game play, the game is more harrowing than its predecessors even in easy mode. It moves faster and requires a very quick reaction time (which kind of stinks when the controls are occasionally unresponsive to the touch. However, that could be an iOS issue and not the game). The Don Bluth animation is as excellent as with the other games and the storyline which jumps between historical and literary fantasy is quite fun. Since this is a sequel, we don’t even need to be introduced to the characters.

The game is only currently available for the iPhone (as is the case with Space Ace, although the original Dragon’s Lair has an HD version). I find that playing it on the iPad 2 on double-size only has minimal pixelation and is quite playable to the point where an HD version is not even necessary to enjoy game play on the larger screen. Thank you, Retina Display.

Currently, the game is on sale for 99 cents for Father’s Day. I paid the full three bucks for it (partially because I’m a fan of Mr. Bluth), because it’s still a bargain compared to the $5 price of Space Ace or Dragon’s Lair HD (Dragon’s Lair remains a buck). I say scoop it up while the price is down.

Quick Take

Value:Medium-high.

Would I Buy Again:For a buck? Definitely.

Learning Curve:Medium.

Who Is It For:Retro gamers and Don Bluth fans.

What I Like:Wonderful animation and good action. Good storyline. Good spacing of controls.

What I Don't Like:Controls occasionally unresponsive. An iPad version would be nice.

Final Statement:The final Don Bluth animated game is on the iPhone, and it's about time.
