Freakin’ sweet! Come spend some time with Stewie and Brian in this outrageously funny game based on favorite characters from the Family Guy TV show. Our Review:

Family GuyThis is a review of the free version of this app.  The paid version costs $2.99 but comes with more levels, more characters and generally more stuff.

Family Guy is hardly the first television program to have a videogame on the iPhone or iPod Touch.  Far from it.  South Park has had two games out already plus an avatar creator.

I will give Seth McFarlane and the creators credit for a funny intro.  The free version has its own intro which is Brian and Stewie sitting in a chair accusing the folks who download the free version of being cheapskates.  Funny stuff.  Sadly, as with the South Park game before it, there are no character voices, only written text as the characters' mouths move.  The sound files would probably take up too much memory.

As for the game itself, I've seen it before.  It's going around a maze, shooting stuff, jumping and generally avoiding things that want to kill you.  I've seen it before in the South Park game.  And even before that when it was Super Mario Bros.  For the Family Guy fan there are several references to the show sprinkled throughout the game.  I even saw the Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future hanging on the background wall of the one level I played.

It's possible to pause the game and turn off the sound and background music as well as callibrate the device to whatever angle you're playing.  It would be nice to have a volume control, though.  And if the background music has anything to do with Family Guy, it escapes me.

It's certainly a cute game and worth the free download if you want to try it out.  They could have included the voices of the characters, but hey nobody is perfect.

Quick Take

Value: Medium.

Would I Buy Again: Probably.

Learning Curve: Low.

Who Is It For: Family Guy enthusiasts who like generic games.

What I Like: The idea. The tiny references to the show.

What I Don't: No voices. No volume control. What's that music?

Final Statement: Worth the free download. Not sure about $2.99.

mm... thanks for info...
