Google Translate really needs no introduction, it’s the go-to site for just about all online translations. There are many Google Translate apps available, but the official one is finally here.

Open the app and choose your language and the language you wish to translate to (filled microphone icons and speaker icons alongside the languages mean the language can accept speech entries and pronounce words). There is the useful language-swap arrow for when you need to switch the two languages, but that is a given to anyone who has used Google Translate.

The main difference between the mobile site and this app is the app’s ability to translate speech. Yes, this includes Google’s incredibly accurate speech recognition software. To test its accuracy I tested star and start. I had no problems.

This app also includes the ability to star words which you frequently use and hear a surprisingly-accurate speaker pronounce any word, all on top of the super smooth, Google-simple interface. My only complaints are the lack of a ‘Detect Language’ option and the inability to translate webpages (how hard would it be to enter a foreign webpage link and then have the translated page open in-app?).

Whether you’ll use this app for work or play (the speech recognition really is fun), you probably won’t be replacing this valuable app.

Quick Take

Value:High

Would I Buy Again:Yes

Learning Curve:Low

Who Is It For:Those who use Google Translate on a weekly basis.

What I Like:It is Google's official app and includes speech support.

What I Don't Like:No 'Detect Language' option like the website offers

Final Statement:I can now say "The Google Translate app is excellent" in 57 different languages.
