To Warner Brothers: here’s a lesson from Marvel Comics. When you are trying to start a movie franchise, do not scrimp on making the iOS game to go with it. Compared to the previous Iron Man and Thor iOS games, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is sadly lacking.

To begin with, the aforementioned at least has a storyline to follow to make sense of the constant monsters one has to destroy. With Green Lantern, it’s just flying through space and shooting robots, on every level you play. The only sophisticated move you can make is grabbing one of the robots with a hook and hitting it into another robot with a baseball bat.

The game is boring and redundant. It’s only by going through the levels that the user can unlock other alien GL’s such as Tomar-Re. A storyline for the game might have helped in this instance.

There is a positive I can say about Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters. You can play it on the iPad 2 at double-size with little to no pixelation. For all intents and purposes, it’s a universal game, so it can suck on both the iPhone and the iPad.

Given the mostly bad reviews that the Green Lantern movie has gotten (although I’m sure it will still do well at the box office), it’s sad that an equal amount of thought went into the franchised games as the movie. On the other hand, if you like the movie, odds are you’ll like this game as well.

Quick Take

Value:Medium-low.

Would I Buy Again:I'm a superhero fan, so yes. Otherwise, no.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Those who really dig the Green Lantern movie.

What I Like:Decent graphics.

What I Don't Like:No storyline. Redundant gameplay. Very limited game.

Final Statement:In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night ... just skip it.

Read the Developer's Notes:
Eons before the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe created an android race of interstellar police—the Manhunters. When corrupted programming made them punish all life, the Manhunters were exiled. Now they’ve returned, seeking vengeance. As gifted but cocky test pilot Hal Jordan and armed with a power ring charged by will, you are the newest recruit in the Corps, assigned to preserve peace and ensure justice.

• MASTER THE RING: Choose from a range of defensive and offensive “hard-light” constructs such as missiles, the war hammer and the claw.

• TAKE FLIGHT: Soar across the universe and destroy legions of enemies.

• UPGRADES: Improve your stats as you progress through the game and unlock upgrades such as a health boost, an energy boost, and even more powerful attacks and throws.
