User Rating:The first day i upgraded my iPhone with firmware 2.0, I immediately downloaded
Cube Runner. I figured this free game would be a good way to ease into using the iPhone’s accelerometer as a game control. Well, three days have passed and I figured it was time to take things to the next level. I downloaded FreeVerse’s MotoRacer last night and have been playing it pretty much non-stop.
What do I think? I love this game! The graphics are awesome. The sound effects are cool. The game play is interesting and fast-paced enough to keep my interest. All in all it’s a whole lot of fun!
This was my first experience with a game that is "arcade worthy", yet built specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch. I’m really quite impressed. It’s amazing how great a game can look on such a small screen. Using the accelerometer to steer took some getting used to (even with my Cube Runner "training"). But, once I got the hang of it, it felt incredibly natural. In fact, using the entire device to control the steering makes the game far more enjoyable. I don’t know that, if given the choice, I would want to go back to using a separate controller.
My biggest complaint? Try as I might the game won’t let me crash my motorcyle. (Now what fun is that??) Fortunately, unlike some other games I have tried, it didn’t crash my phone either!
Quick-Take
The “WOiP 5” (What’s On iPhone’s Five descriptive adjectives): Cool, fun, fast-paced, well-executed, arcade-like
Overall Value: High
Entertainment Value: High
"Uniqueness": Very High (uses entire device to control the game)
Graphics: High
Level of Difficulty: Medium to High
Age Appropriateness: Grade school or older
Longevity (will it hold interest over time): Ask me in a week or two I’m too busy playing it right now to answer
Would I Buy Again: Yes
Final Statement: Not only is the game itself excellent but it is a great way to see the potential of using the iPhone or iPod Touch as a gaming device. If you want a fast-moving, fun game that uses the iPhone’s accelerometer as a control this should be high on your list.
