User Rating:People have gotten used to $.99 apps in the App Store. It’s when prices go up to $4.99 that it is required to have a media powerhouse like Warner Brothers behind it (and having a tie-in to an upcoming movie probably isn’t a bad idea either). As a warning, if you prefer games in which characters sit around and talk about their feelings, then this is probably not the game for you.
This is an awesome game. The graphics are second-to-none. Even the sound effects are cool. Blood flows like wine. You see gallons of the stuff when you hack at other characters (usually evil ones) with your katana. The game itself reminds me of Mortal Kombat, if you had to fight multiple opponents at once and had a sword.
You can choose to play in one of two modes, story or survival. "Story" simply tells the tale of a ninja who goes against his masters and gives some motion comic backstory to the fighting. It’s not totally necessary but nice if you prefer to have a reason for slicing up Yakuza. It’s possible to watch the videos alone in the application settings.
I particularly like how every screen keeps with the theme of the game. Even adjusting the volume involves putting a sword in a sheath. One other cool feature is that it’s possible to listen to your iPod Touch or iPhone music library while playing the game. It’s also possible to have multiplayer games.
There is some minimal promotion of the movie and other WB games (somewhat annoying when one has spent $5), but it doesn’t take up too much screen space.
I cannot praise this game enough. It’s definitely my type. Well worth the price.
UPDATE 3/12/2010: The price of Ninja Assassin has just been decreased to $.99. Get it while it’s hot.
Quick Take
Value:High.
Would I Buy Again:Most Probably.
Learning Curve:Low.
Who Is It For:Those who like Hack-and-Slash.
What I Like:Where to begin? The graphics. The sound. The game overall.
What I Don't Like:Some minor advertisements which are annoying for a game of this price.
Final Statement:Well worth the five dollars.
