The obscurely-named Street Fighter IV Volt is an updated version of last year’s much-loved port of the legendary beat-em-up game. The updates are minor and the game is fundamentally the same as its predecessor, but Volt will no doubt draw in hardcore Street Fighter fans as well as those who are yet to own the brilliant iPhone port of the game.

Volt features four new characters; Balrog, Vega and Cody will be familiar to fans of the series, while there is also a fourth ‘secret’ character to unlock whose name I won’t utter here. While this does not suddenly make the game roster gargantuan and it evades me why these characters were omitted from the ‘non-Volt’ version of the game, fans will be pleased that all the most iconic Street Fighter faces are now present.

Volt features a wealth of fight modes. Aside from the obligatory Arcade, Survival and Challenge modes, there is now an online mode that can be played with a WiFi connection. The idea is great, but after several online fights, I’ve found the latency to be consistently choppy. Unless Capcom address this then the best feature of Volt will go to waste, making the whole game feel like a bit of a cash-in

Accompanying this new feature is the bizarre ‘Wandering Warrior’ mode, which isn’t as cool as it sounds. Here, you have an ‘Avatar’ that fights your online opponent’s avatar in the background. As you win fights, you can upgrade and develop your avatar, but seeing as this doesn’t have any impact on your fights it feels pointless (unless you like the idea of a basic Street Fighter trading card game as opposed to the game itself).

Everything that made Street Fighter IV great is still here. The gameplay is cleverly simplified for the iPhone format and the graphical style, designed specifically for the iPhone, is a feast on the eyes. Sorry for coining a cliché, but this is very much the Street Fighter we all know and love.

Apart from the additional characters (who could easily have been integrated into the previous game as add-ons), the new features in Volt feel a little half-baked. As such, it’s debatable whether owners of the non-Volt version will get their money’s worth here. If, however, you haven’t yet invested in Street Fighter for the iPhone, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t start here. Despite milking the brand a bit, Volt is a slightly enhanced version of the best fighting game on the iPhone.
