Mortal Kombat is one of those games that turned into a massive franchise. As a result, it was inevitable that an iOS port would be coming. Sadly, this particular effort was not perfect and still could use some work. As a note, I was lucky enough to grab this game when the price dropped from $6.99 to $.99.
The app begins by having you choose the character you want to play, like every other version of Mortal Kombat. You then are locked in a battle with one of the other characters to the death using a variety of fighting moves gotten from a virtual joystick and a set of five buttons.
The graphics are somewhat old school. I recognize that it adds to the retro feel of the game but from the progress made in graphics since Mortal Kombat originally appeared, I expected more. It seems like the creators went out of their way to make the game seem like the original arcade version.
The game is quite violent, naturally. I have yet to win a round. You may want to keep this one away from small children. The game allows you to customize the button layout on the screen as well as turn on and off the music and sound effects.
In the end, it’s still a good game. I’d appreciate more panning, perspective and general 3D effects, and maybe even a little more backstory, but this game should satisfy anybody with a history of Mortal Kombat.
