Zombie Gunship is one of those games that is perfectly suited to the iPhone format, and yet manages to offer a gameplay experience that is a little different to anything we’ve seen before. The aim is simple: from a first-person night-vision perspective, blow away as many zombies and other nocturnal creatures as you can before they reach the bunker.
The first thing that’s striking about this little gem is how realistic the game looks. Sure, it helps that the whole game is black and white and is intentionally blurry to create the sense of being an actual helicopter pilot in some middle-eastern zombie warzone, but the developers have really pulled the graphics off to perfection.
The gameplay is equally gritty. Naturally, your heat-seeking vision doesn’t detect zombies (their blood runs cold, as if you need reminding) so you just shoot at anything that’s dark and shambling.
Amidst the zombies there’ll be civilians trying to reach the bunker safely, and there’s nothing more satisfying than precisely picking off waves of zombies to clear their path to safety. Kill too many civilians, however, and you lose.
As is the case with any self-respecting game, there is a tonne of upgrades for you to beef up your chopper with. Aside from improving your 25mm Gatling Gun to Kingdom Come, you can also purchase a 40mm Bofors Gun and a big, brutal Howitzer. As you purchase upgrades, the dramatic increase in your zombie-mowing capabilities makes Zombie Gunship a pretty hard game to put down, as the only thing better than raining hell down on zombies from a chopper is raining f**king hell down on them from a chopper.
Zombie Gunship is linked up with Game Center, so you can compare your stats with the world, though since I never make any of the leaderboards this is the most depressing aspect of the game for me. While most popular iPhone games seem to go for the quirky, puzzle-style gameplay, Zombie Gunship is dark, realistic and, most importantly, a hell of a lot of fun.
