For those familiar with Mario Kart, Shrek Kart is a very similar game, except it substitutes characters from the Shrek franchise for the Mario franchise.  You can be Shrek, Donkey, Puss-In-Boots, Fiona or a bunch of other characters including the ghost of Lord Farquaad (some characters are only unlocked when certain levels are reached).

You can choose easy, medium or hard in terms of difficulty and can also choose between various tracks in various places in the Shrek continuity.  There are also different types of play (single race, tournament, challenge) and it’s possible to play single or multi-player.  You can even choose to use the gyroscope (thus turning the device like a steering wheel) or touch screen controls to play.

This is a fun game and easy to learn.  Granted, it is geared towards kids but the kid in me got a thrill racing as Puss-In-Boots.  Controls are easy to use for the most part, although I think the screen controls might be easier to use for controlling the cart for turning rather than rotating the screen to turn.  I would have preferred to tilt the screen for acceleration and breaking rather than a constant speed for the cart (which cant be controlled) and only having a break button on screen (even in accelerometer mode), but that’s a minor issue.  The game does have an excellent tutorial system in case something confuses the user.  It’s also possible to share results on Facebook and Twitter.

Is the game worth five bucks?  I’m not sure.  But it’s certainly worth $.99 should it ever go on sale again.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:At $.99? Yes.

Learning Curve:Low to Medium.

Who Is It For:Shrek fans and racing game lovers.

What I Like:Excellent graphics and animation.

What I Don't Like:Using the accelerometer with screen controls can be slightly confusing at first.

Final Statement:If you can spare the five bucks, it's a cute game to have for kids of all ages.
