If this message appear after update iPhone software to iOS 4.1, you should read the latest tutorial how-to jailbreak iOS4.1 by using limera1n.

Or, if you can’t get it work using limera1n, try greenpois0n instead.

If this message appear after your iPhone 4(4G) or after you updated to iOS4, you will need to activate your iPhone using official SIM card (i.e: AT&T micro SIM card) or phonebook card, because the recent jailbreak tools such as Spirit Jailbreak or JailbreakMe need an activated iPhone (doesn’t support hacktivation like blackra1n does).

Most people will see this problem after restore iPhone software or Update iPhone software.
And then, when the iPhone connected to the computer, iTunes says:

The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.

Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrierβ€šΓ„Γ΄s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.

If your iPhone is not Factory Unlocked (FU), but you are using unofficial SIM card in the iPhone, you will get this message after restore/update iPhone software, unless you either insert compatible sim cards or continue read this post.

So, how to fix “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported” error on iTunes?

iTunes showing this error because your iPhone is asking for activation. You can simply remove this error by inserting official SIM-card where the iPhone locked to. i.e. I have an iPhone which is locked to AT&T carrier (US). When I connect it to iTunes, this issue came up. All I need to do now is inserting AT&T SIM card to iPhone, re-connect to computer, and iTunes will start the activation process.
But, I do not live in the US. Can I still use AT&T SIM card to activate iPhone? YES, you can.
You can buy AT&T SIM card, or any sim card which your iPhone locked to on eBay for a few bucks.

Any other solution?
– Another simple solution to fix this incompatible sim card issue is: jailbreak the iPhone with software which supports hacktivation.

On 3rd November 2009, Hacktivation was supported by blackra1n.

iTunes syncing was working after unlocked, and active with another carrier.

It is still unlocked I am able to place and accept calls, but its not syncing.

It gives this error. I don't know where my old att sim is.

The weird thing is that the other day, all my apps got alphabetized.

    • Have you tried backup your iPhone, update to a newer version, then re-jailbreak and re-unlock it?

      • Giuseppe

Hey I'm in the same boat and want to re jailbreak my iphone to fix it, however because iTunes is displaying this message it won't let me launch 3.1.2 firmware to update it, so if I can't get the new firmware on it how do I fix it? =S – iPhone is currently working and unlocked on 3.0 with ultrasn0w however it still won't let me sync and this is what i'm trying to fix.

    • I’ve tried just about every suggestions and everything after running into similar problem. I upgraded to new firmware 4.0 on 3g 16GB, a refurbished phone given by Apple as a replacement and a second swap. Last 3g phone Apple gave before this had exactly same problem. It would not recognise SIM and after extensive test at the genius bar, Apple decide to replace it. That will be exactly 5wks ago of the refurbished 2nd swap and upon upgrading to 4.0, same problem is back.
Same SIM card not recognised on 3g is recognised on
3gs iPhone but 3g will not recognise any SIM-Card at all. I have tried everything trust me. I realised it’s a software issue within the 3g or iPhones in general. That been said, I gave a 3Gs on 3.1.3 I had not upgraded yet to 4.0. I'm dreading doing an upgrade on my second iphone considering what's going on currently with my 3g . Apple is really losing it’s credibility here slowly.

      • I added the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia via Wifi and installed the unlock software untrasnow so my SIM card is now recognised and untethered. I only have to do this again if I restore.

  • Ross

hello…I use blackra1n for unlocking my iPhone 3GS but always when I close and open the iPhone it wants me to connect the phone to the iTunes…I dont know why ?!! looks like the phone opens in DFU mode..

    any one know why?

    Thanks

    • Hi Ross, it's called tethered jailbreak.
We need the jailbreaking tools in order to get iPhone 3GS fully jailbroken.

  • Help me

My problem is that I got an Iphone from a friend. And after reinstalling it, I cant get in to it. It says that I need a supported sim card. So I can't use it at all.

I have tried thousands of times jailbreaking it by using Blackra1n. But I can't complete it because I need the supported Sim card.

    • Did you successfully jailbreak it?
You don't need supported SIM card to jailbreak, simply run blackra1n, then "supported sim card" error on iTunes will be dissappear.

      • Nacho

Blackra1n can't make dissappear the “supported sim card” error .
        You are wrong.

        • Then, what does it do?
blackra1n will hacktivate your iPhone, hence your iPhone will by-pass activation and iTunes won't tell your invalid sim card anymore.

          • I thought UPDATING iphone 2.2.1 is ok., but it asks for the sim card and now the itunes logo is stucked on the screen and i can only do emergency calls. how can i fix that?

Hi there. I have an iphone 3G Modem firmware 02.28.00
It was jailbroken for me in UK when brand new(I don't know which prog was used but I have Cydia and Installer). I am abroad now for a year and not going back to UK straight away so I need help here if you can. I have never updated the phone software again after that. Never had any problems until today. As usual, had my MacBook software update done(iTunes was updated too – maybe that is the problem?) and then connected my iphone. Got the message "SIM is not supported blah, blah, blah…" The phone is working fine otherwise. Calls, texts and everything else are not affected. The only thing is that I can't update my music, pics and calendars. Please advise what to do. Should I update my iphone Modem firmware? I know that newer software is better but I am worried that I won't be able to do everything correctly and might block my iphone to "unusable" state. All I want is a minimum of changes – just to get the iphone to upload music, pics and calendars. If you believe that I should update the Modem firmware – I really want to have all the latest features – please tell me how and what firmware to update to(what's unlockable now?), what programs to use and everything else.

I would really appreciate your help with this.

    Cheers!

    • Hi Siaerhei, you can update your iPhone 3G software without problem.
It was unlockable by using blackra1n, also hacktivate your iPhone so you can sync musics, videos, etc to your iPhone.
However, upgrading your iPhone software will affect to apps on your iPhone. Some apps may not work if it doesn’t have updated version for the new firmware.

  • Siarhei

Oh, one more thing. I don't have any UK sim cards with me.

    Cheers.

  • Siarhei

Thanks for that Ryan. However I am not sure it was blackra1n. Redsn0w or something else… How do I update my jailbroken unlocked iphone with new firmware? Which firmware to use? And how to unlock it again to any SIM?

    Cheers

  • Siarhei

Shall I update it via iTunes?

Anybody with a few more ideas?

Any idea? I can recieve calls but cant go past the emmergency screen

  • Important Trouble Shooting. Update 06-08-2010

Fix the "THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED" problem

itunes have made some changes to block unlocking of iphones on 06th august 2010, and will lockdown the iphone to use only original sim even if jailbroken and unlocked via jailbreakme and ultrasn0w.

If you dont have one already get an activation sim from http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/cable_picker/94917_i

remember, the activation sim is only to activate and get you past the "slide for emergency" and give "slide to unlock"

we have uploaded a full guide to our servers, you will find it at http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/simhelp.zip

this help file will show you how to activate it, jailbreak and unlock, it pays special attention to the problem created by itunes update today that is blocking access to the phone even when unlocked.

  • bledi

ok guys my iPhone 3GS has blocked before it was used through black rain then I did update to 4.0.2 and was locked sim operator AT & T , so I did downgrade to 4.0.1 but the same message on iTunes "The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not seem to be supported" so I can only use digital keypad for emergency calls. What should I do, I tried many times but nothing even saved all the code on the host but nothing …… if someone would help me I will appreciate some help

  • Hello people, i have a iphone which didnt have any problems until i plugged it in my computer then updated it with itunes. I have the ''Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card.'' I would like to know do i HAVE to have the exact sim card it came with or can i provide a sim card from the same network. Because when i inserted my t-mobile sim inside it said tmobile in the corner with signal. I have had this iphone for a while now and i have paid for apps as also downloaded free ones i really dont want to reboot it and get rid of all information but if so PLEASE give me answer to what i should do

    • Is it a FU iPhone?

    • To activate it, you must have AT&T sim card (in case it's locked to AT&T). But, if it's factory unlocked, you just need to activate it.

      • fariz

I have FU iphone 4 updated with the latest firmware 4.3.3 I was using it for almost 6 months, i have restore it to factory settings and give it to a friend and he is facing the same problem, although i tried to put back my SIM card and still having the same problem. how u think we can fix it?! how to activate it!?

  • Katelynn

So I got a used 2g 8 gig ipod and jailbroke it yesterday. I had a lot of problems getting it to recognize my tmobile sim card. When it finally did, I was able to use it for a few minutes and then it said no sim card. If I turn the phone on and off a few times I can get it to recognize it again for a few minutes and then the same thing happens.

Is this a problem with my sim card? Or my jailbreak? Or even the actual iphone? Any suggestions?

If I update it and try to re-jailbreak it like was suggested to someone else on here, isn't hte new firmware supposed to prevent jailbreaking? Or will it be ok because my phone is a 2G?

  • yehey/…it really works..thnk you so mch.

  • napare

my ihone hang up, no signal and say sim card does not appear to be supported .i want to let it back original default setting how can i

i cannot open an itunes account coz i dont have credit card

  • canadian

    This did not work.
I have a iphone 2g, (the original iphone)
I ran the restore in itunes 10 in order to unjailbreak my iphone which had the old 2.x firmware that did not allow me to get any apps from the appstore.

After doing so i am also stuck with the emergency slider and itunes complaining about my sim card.

I tried blackra1n and it did not work.
It just got stuck at the waiting to reboot while my phone screen was black.

Any ideas how to fix this on an iphone 2g?

  • Ryland

      Please.

  • Carrie

    Hi –

I purchased 3G iPhone from a friend who got it from an Apple Store as unlocked. I installed a simm card from my provider and activated it. Came home and connected to iTunes to put some music on it and it automatically upgrade the software which killed the phone and took it to an emergency only state. Itunes tells me the simm card is unsupported. I downloaded and used blackra1n but it keeps telling me to connect the phone to itunes. I've tried the fixes from that website and rebooting but can't seem to get past that.

Can someone help me out with a step that I'm obviously missing?

    Thanks.

    • What is the version of installed firmware ?
Try limera1n (I suppose it has 4.1 firmware)

    • Did you remember the iOS version did you download?

  • I bought a 3GS 16gb iphone off ebay last year in december sometime.
I recieved it in india becasue i went there for a holiday. Back then i had absolutely NO idea about jailbreaking and how to put apps onn and how to put songs, videos, photos and crap onn my iphone?!!?!? also 1 of my family friends had an iphone and they jailbroke it from some hacking store? im not sure wat it was called? anyways so i decided that i should probably go to the store and get my phone jailbroken and get free apps on it. so i did it. (in newzealand now>>) my iphone is exactly 1 year old and i thought that my apps are getting old so i should get some new ones. now i had no idea that if your iphone isnt factory unlocked or it was jailbroken you couldnt update it until i read this blog. so i updated it and this error came up>>>" The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported." when i saw this message i panicked! so i went to the mall and checked with vodafone -my simcard carrier………..that if it was a problem in my simcard? they said no it was a problem in the phone!
now i was reallyyyyy scared…!!!!?!?!?!? my question is that, although my iphone is jailbroken can i still fix this problem>!>??????????????? HOW!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!! I BEG YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :O :S :'(

    • Hi Rose, when did you updated the iPhone software?

First, find out which version your iPhone firmware is, then find appropriate jailbreak tool for it.

      • I updated my iphone software yesterday.
my original iphone version was 3.2.1 and it got upgraded to the latest one. which im not sure which one? so how should i fix this problem?

        • It was updated to 4.2.1
You should jailbreak it using the latest version of redsn0w.
          Download redsn0w 0.9.6b4

The steps mostly similar with this jailbreak tutorial

          • oh okay.
so if i update it to the latest version of redsn0w will i still be able to put new apps and songs on it? and also will i be able to use my normal vodafone simcard? πŸ™‚

My iPhone 4 was working fine with a Geeve Card here in Malaysia, after originally bringing it from the US under ATT (monopoly mofos). I had it jail broken and unlocked and it worked fine with the Geeve Card. I had a problem with trying to retrieve my photos and video from a computer at the phone store here and after some issues i was able to backup my old files but in the meanwhile my version 4.3.3 which had recently been updated when i lost everything was still 4.3.3 but was missing the hotspot setting. Now i was told by the guy at hte shop that restoring to factory settings would restore it. STUPIDLY i followed his advice and restored it, upon which i found myself with a non working Iphone. the problem is that i don't have the original att sim card with me. What can i do? If i get one sent or find one from someone here wlill it allow me to activate my phone or keep me on the plug in emergency only page?
I need some help as i now have no working phone in a foreign country!! Help please would be highly appreciated.

I called again to AT&T, they told its unlock from that side for more issue need to to to Apple customer care.

I have just bought an iphone 4G, on ebay, and done a full restore due to it still having apps, pics etc from previous owner. It is now saying incompatible sim. The phone was bought from an apple store and was apparently unlocked. It was used on O2.
Is there any way to unlock the phone, to support any carrier, without jailbreaking or is jb the only way?

  • Ranjeet

    Hi

I have Iphone 4s. It was locked to Vodafone UK but I got it factory unlocked. While activating it I am stuck on a screen that says "**The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.**"

What should I do? For activating I used O2 sim after removing the sim I checked the carrier it is showing O2 as my carrier though
