Funny things happen at the Appstore! The spot for Editors Choice was occupied by Circa News and suddenly, it got replaced by the Summly app. I was really confused, because Circa was a hell of an app. But, now that I played around with the newbie, it all started making so much sense because Summly is everything we loved about Circa plus everything we wished Circa could have.

To be more specific. Summly is an awesome News-reader app. Its minimalistic yet colorful interface makes even children grow fond of News. The app opens the curtain to a beautifully illustrated Coverpage with an Apple headline (it is odd that you cannot change the category of news on your coverpage). Swipe Left for the colorful tiles representing each category. Tap on a tile to see headlines in that genre or drag right to reload the latest entries. Select an interesting news from the list and it comes up with a short summary of the story. Double tap to expand it into a more readable and complete story (400 characters). Swipe down or tap on the blue arrow and you have the original source opened in the built-in browser. At anytime, swipe up for the previous menu or tap & hold for animated sharing options.

You have the option to add your own Categories or Keywords and gather latest articles on them, but currently, these seem to have trouble in getting loaded (Update: all is well after a re-install ). For World news, Sports, Local news, Tech news etc you have options to select the sources, from a dozen renowned websites, that you want to follow. Although there is an option to save articles, I would have preferred Instapaper integration, too.

After spending about a day with this beauty, I can safely conclude that this is the best you could get. Try it yourself and I bet you couldn’t tell that the app was developed by a 17 year old school student!
