Do your slightly big fingers have trouble typing on the standard touch-screen keyboard? Are you sick of having to backspace after every word you type to correct it? If so, you might be interested in an app called Swype, which brings a completely new way of typing on your android touch screen keyboard. Heavy emphasis on the word might, though.

The Good

Once you learn how to use Swype, you’ll more than likely want to stick with the keyboard alternative. It’s a great tool for those without an off-screen QWERTY keyboard who have trouble texting and emailing from their touchscreen (such as myself). Swyping to type does take some getting used to at first, but once you’ve got it down, you’ll be texting much faster. There’s also a speech to text that is ideal for those that just hate typing in general.

The Bad

The worst aspect of using Swype is the learning curve required to do so. Seriously. This is one of those tools that certainly takes some practice and getting used to. The tutorial isn’t that great, either, which further exacerbates the problem of learning to use Swype. Another issue is sometimes it corrects slang words that you may not want have corrected in a text message.  Words with two or more of the same letter next to each other are hard to swype. For example, swyping to type “stellar” or “feeble” is a challenge because there’s two l’s and two e’s, respectively.

The Ugly Truth

The good news is that Swype is only 99 cents on Google Play, because if it were anything more, I probably wouldn’t recommend purchasing it. While its text to speech is the best feature of the application, its original intended purpose, which is swyping to type, leaves much to be desired. If you can get by the learning curve and pick new things up quickly, Swype might just be the alternative keyboard app for you.

But, if you don’t have time to be bothered with learning something new, stick with android’s stock keyboard until something better comes along. And if you’re looking for a better product, though, look for SwiftKey on Google Play
