As a musician I have been a bit underwealmed by the music offerings on the App Store. Sure it’s cool to be able to turn your iPod Touch into a piano, but as Ben noted yesterday, it is more a curiosity than a musical instrument.

That noted, the music-based games offered are stellar- at least TapTapRevenge is. Dan described TapTapRevenge to me as “Guitar Hero meets the iPhone”. That pretty much covers it. The simple playing screen looks like three guitar strings that begin together at the to of the screen and then slowly separate creating a triangle with the point at the top. While music plays "beat bubbles" slide down one of the three strings in time with the music playing. Tap the bubble as it crosses the bottom and you get credit. Miss the bubble and the game lets you know. Miss a lot of them and you feel like throwing the iphone across the room (well, maybe not).

There are a number of levels of play. At the easiest level the bubbles move more slowly and are more spaced out. At the level of difficulty increases to does the pace and the number. In addition, higher levels of game play require you to not only tap the bubbles but to pivot the device slightly to the left. If you do the accelerometer counts it the same way the game counts a proper finger tap. It is a cool feature that is unique to the iPhone and iPod Touch and its movement-sensitive powers.

Unfortunately, the current selection of music, while good in my opinion, is exceptionally limited.

Quick Take

Overall Value: High
Entertainment Value: High
Graphics: Acceptable
Level of Difficulty: Player determined
Age Appropriate: Not for the very young
Longevity:  High, especially as the music selection grows and/or songs from your iPhone can be used during game play.
Would I Buy Again: YES. It is free but I like it enough that I would probably pay $5 for it.
Final Statement: TapTapRevenge is a fun and captivating game. The only thing keep it from receiving 5 stars is the limited selection of music.
