What if I told you that a new hit game has been rising the charts in iTunes and it has nothing to do with birds? This casual puzzle game has unique gameplay mechanics, colorful graphics, and a cutesy protagonist that tugs at your heart strings every time he means an untimely death. The best part is that this squishy cube is a healthy non-meat product called To-Fu: The Trials of Chi.

The game is simple, you play a cube of tofu that has to survive a maze of obstacles to reach a fortune cookie at the end of each level. You do so by stretching your like soy friend and then letting go to shoot him across to other walls, on which he will either stick, bounce, or slide down. Among the obstacles at hand you must avoid spikes, and spinning saw blades, as well as lasers. There are switches, bank-shots, and moving platforms that will assists you in reaching your goal. Each level has three achievements. First for completing the levels, second for doing so after collecting all the blue orbs called chi in the level, and third to complete that level in under set number of moves. Some levels require you to take drastically different approaches to the level to complete the tasks. All this is wrapped in a cute package that grunts and coos with your actions and even givens you a reverent bow at the beginning of each level.

The difficult ramps up slowly as it introduces new elements to the game, but I found some of the one hundred levels to be down right mean. The frustration can be felt after you are sawed in half by the same blade time and again. The aiming on To-fu is hard at times with your finger getting in the way of seeing your shot, but overall I didn’t find the controls too aggravating. It seems that the game would love it’s replay value once you have completed that one hundred levels. The puzzles were not so much about finding the solutions as they were more about the skill it took to pull them off accurately. To-Fu: The Trials of Chi is on sale for $.99 for a limited time so I would highly recommend this title at its current price. I guess if we can’t have Super Meatboy on the iOS, we can at least have tofu.

We rate this app 4 out of 5 stars.
