Smartphones have provided us with a new platform from which we can stay constantly connected to the world. Whether this is reading the news, philosophical texts, or watching the depressingly gripping freakshow that is Jeremy Kyle, all our needs are catered. TVCatchup is an Android app that very much ticks the latter of the purposes that our smartphones can serve.

The app gives users access to around 50 Freeview channels, no matter where we are. The app can be run using 3G or WiFi, so unless you have a tight data allowance, you’re pretty much free to watch freeview TV wherever you are.

Amidst the channels included on TVCatchup are the staple terrestrial channels, as well as the likes of Five, Dave, BBC Three, movies4men and Film4. Most of the channels are admittedly pretty trashy, but with a fairly wide selection, you’re likely to find something you like.

The app is extremely no-nonsense and easy-to-use, opening up quickly to show a TV guide showing what’s on now and next on all the channels. At their best, the streams are of very good quality, and adapt depending on what your internet speed is.

TVCatchup is only available to people located in the UK, so if you’re abroad you’re out of luck. The service is perfectly legit (despite constant failed court attempts by people that claim otherwise), and is without doubt the best means of watching live UK TV on your mobile device. Hook it up to a TV, and you may as well have full-on Freeview (technically without the need for a TV license, shhhhhh).

We rate this app 5 out of 5 stars.
