Are you edgy with a love for games that go out of their way to make people feel uncomfortable? There is definitely a few moments when playing the game Unpleasant Horse by the PopCap’s new dev group 4th & Battery when I felt bad about sending innocent flying horses to their death. It lasts a moment and then I make my winged Hello Kitty reject leap from it’s last victim directly onto another annoyingly cheerful equine weighing it down to its doom.

PopCap, never a stranger to great gameplay and animated graphics, recently started 4th & Battery as a studio for releasing “edgier” games that still share PopCap’s tongue and cheek humor. If this studio’s initial title is any indications I can’t wait to see what else they have up their sleeves. Unpleasant Horse is a quick and dirty game of tapping where you must jump between clouds looking for winged horses that you then have to jump onto. The weight of your depressing self is too much for these steeds, and so by and by their will be dragged down to the ground, which for no particular reason, is completely covered in whirling saw blades. Once the horse hits the ground your iPhone emits a horrible die horse sound as animated cartoon blood and guts fly into the air. Rinse and repeat this morbid ballet until you miss a cloud or horse, and you fall gracefully into your whirling fate. Running into birds gives you the opportunity to steal feathers which give you the ability to jump in midair. The classical music that plays during the carnage and is a great juxtaposition to the head-banging metal that plays during on the menu screen.

Some people will be immediately disgusted by the senseless violence this game is built around. I think PopCap realized this, which is why they decided to release this game under a different name than the same one known for their fantastic Plants vs. Zombies. The gameplay is simple and addictive, while the sounds are guttural, and if you can keep from taking this game too seriously, will keep you coming back for more. 4th & Battery has recently reached out to fan on Twitter and compiled a handful of ideas for improving the game including adding GameCenter support, and they state an update will be coming very soon to put these ideas into action. If you have a demented scene of humor and are looking for a great causal game, Unpleasant Horse is a good way to blow off some steam.
