Social networking and navigating your way through traffic are two areas of our lives in which smartphones have proven themselves worthwhile companions. It therefore seems as logical to splice these two things together as it is to cross-breed a panther with an eagle. That is what Waze aims to achieve.

Waze calls itself a ‘cool social GPS driving and navigation app,’ and it’s a testament to the potential of the social network concept to be used for humanitarian ends. Well, by humanitarian we mean helping fellow drivers get to their destinations in the easiest possible way.

Waze functions by allowing users to upload their comments on what’s going on on the roads they’re driving on. Whether there’s a traffic jam, accident or place where you can buy the cheapest petrol, you can submit these details into the app for the rest of Waze’s users to be notified.

Waze’s in-built navigation takes into account all the community-generated advice that gets bashed into it, and can automatically re-route your navigation in response to the constantly-changing conditions of the road.

You can report information on Waze using voice-activation commands, so it’s not necessary for you to break the law to use it. To add a little bit of competitive edge to things, you can even move up the Waze rankings as you contribute valid traffic information.

There are few apps that are so dependant on a thriving community to fulfil their purpose, so the folks at Waze went out on a limb in making this app. Thankfully nearly 10m downloads on Google Play, the app is in full swing, and is therefore a great way to save time and money when you’re on the road.

We rate this app 5 out of 5 stars.
