33rd Division is another of those strategy games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The objective is to move multiple soldiers of various functions (sargeant, medic, etc.) across a field to their designated safe zones while avoiding being seen by enemy soldiers. This is all done in the context of World War II. The first level is in Normandy, France.
The graphics work well. The user is given an aerial view of the field that the soldier must walk across without getting in the sights of the enemy soldiers (usually designated as a beam of light from in front of them). If you get in their sites, you are immediately shot dead and lose a life. The game has two modes: "Life", which gives you a limited number of character lives to lose before the game is over and "Time", which designates a limited time in which the soldier can get to the safety zone.
The developers even play a bit with reality by giving the soldiers certain powers or abilities if they cross a special symbol that appears randomly on the screen. These symbols grant things like teleporation and freezing of the enemy soldiers. Either of those would have been handy to have during the actual war. The game can be paused by tapping the top left screen and sometimes that comes in handy to figure out your next move. A built-in tutorial also provides details on other game features.
It’s a cute game, but not great. It would be improved with better graphics and perhaps multiple perspectives. However, it works well for what it is.
Quick Take
Value:Medium.
Would I Buy Again:Not really.
Learning Curve:Medium.
Who Is It For:People who like drawing lines.
What I Like:Decent graphics. Good concept.
What I Don't Like:Game could be a lot more. Multiple perspectives.
Final Statement:An okay game for an okay price.
