Action Movie FX was originally released as a promotion for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but it was such a hit that it remains popular (particularly at a cost of free) even when the buzz for the aforementioned movie is dying down. When you use it, it’s easy to see why.
Action Movie FX takes a video taken via the app and superimposes some sort of action scene above it, whether it be a missile strike, a wrecking ball coming down or a flying car coming at you. It’s a sign of things that come when decent computer effects can be created on your phone.
The app makes money through in-app purchases of additional effects. Each 2-packs of effects is 99 cents so you could get a fully-loaded app for four bucks. Not bad, in my opinion. Kids in particular will love the idea of taking a video of their enemies then aiming a missile at them and watching them blow up.
As a note, the app can only film in landscape mode. This makes sense as landscape is closer to the dimensions of a movie screen.
If I had any complaints about the app, it would be that it isn’t available for the iPad. This sort of effect would look amazing on a larger screen. However, I can see the inferior camera and resolution of the iPad getting in the way so perhaps that enhancement (or something akin to Action Movie FX HD) will be released in the future.
For a small fee, this would be a cute app to own. For free, it’s a must-have even if you only use it to keep the kids occupied.

Who Is It For:Amateur directors who prefer action movies. Or kids.
What I Like:Excellent concept and good execution.
What I Don't Like:Would be nice to also be available for iPad.
Final Statement:Action Movie FX could make you the next George Lucas, or even better.
