Air Playit is a new app that can stream your entire video collection from your desktop to your iPhone.
Because your phone and desktop will be communicating, you will need to download both the iPhone app and the server, both of which are free. Setup, surprisingly, is incredibly easy. After the server is downloaded and installed on your Mac or PC, you simply tell the server which media folders to watch, and the app easily finds and connects to your computer.
Air Playit’s website claims that the app is capable of streaming 320 different video and audio formats, which pretty much guarantees that your media will be compatible with this app. MP4s, MOVs, even MKVs all played, just not a rare OGG video file, which didn’t even appear in my list of available videos.
There is a nice feature where you can download some of your videos to your phone for offline viewing, if they happen to be MP4s. You could also avoid using the precious 16 or 32 gigabytes on your phone and stream your videos over 3G or 4G (which is weird because neither the iPhone nor the iPad is 4G capable), if your expensive data plan will allow it..
But streaming was not as quick as I would like on this app, even over wifi. (I did test this app over a Wireless G network, and the newer, quicker N networks probably help improve loading times though.) I would pause the app and wait for some more of the video to load, but the app does not seem to buffer videos if the video is paused!
Also, I was disappointed to find that there is no iPad app for Air Playit. The iPad, with its larger screen and incredible battery life, make it a much better media consuming device. If you do want streaming capabilities for both your iPhone and iPad, Air Video, an app we reviewed a while ago, offers this for only $3.
Another thing Air Video offers that Air Playit doesn’t: better AirPlay support. With a name like Air Playit, you might expect to be able to use Apple’s AirPlay to its fullest. Well you can’t. Though AirPlay is present in this app, only audio streaming is available, which, in a video streaming app, is not of the utmost importance.
But for a free app, Air Playit is really something special. And keep in mind that this is a 1.0 version and that the app is sure to improve. For only a few minutes’ time, you can take your video collection with you anywhere you go.

Learning Curve:Low to medium, depending on how easy the setup is for you.
Who Is It For:Those with a video collection who would rather stream it (and watch it) on their iPhone.
What I Like:It?s free, it works, and most will have no complaints about it.
What I Don't Like:Loading times were a little slow. No native iPad support and no video AirPlay support (yet).
Final Statement:A free but worthy competitor to the more well known, still more powerful Air Video.
