My 5 year old daughter LOVES Alvin and the Chipmunks– she can’t get enough of them. So when I saw they had an app that tied in with the latest movie, I thought "Here’s my chance to be the ‘cool dad’! I’ll be so hip when I show her the Alvin and the Chipmunks app." And with one happy kid, that also meant it would make this review a joy to write.
I fired up the app and as expected she started to smile just at the opening screen. I pressed the ‘Munk Me!’ button and encouraged her to let loose her inner chipmunk.
She said a few words and we played it back. The interface was responsive and the sound was clear. She sounded like she could have been IN Alvin and the Chipmunks. In other words, the app worked flawlessly. But to my surprise, she wasn’t impressed at all. She just didn’t care.
I tried the same thing on my 2 year old (who’s never seen Alvin and the Chipmunks) like to just press the play button and hear him over and over again.
I tried to gain each of their interests in the Karakoe mode (where you can sing along with 3 different tracks), and the “DJ Remix” (where you can play and “mix” multiple samples together), but they just walked away.
So based on my unscientific survey of 2 young children, even though the app works perfectly, and it’s easy to use, and it ties in with one of their current “favorite” things; the app just fell flat.
Quick Take
Value:High if you think Alvin is the best thing in the world. Otherwise, probably pretty low
Would I Buy Again:Suprisingly not--I thought my kids would love this one!
Learning Curve:None...features (play, record, save, etc) use a standard UI
Who Is It For:People who always wanted to be in the Chipmunks band
What I Like:The sound quality was good.
What I Don't Like:I thought the karakoe and the "Remix" features were pretty lacking.

A virtual bandstand where you can play instruments and drop beats through looped audio cues, or other audio cues, by tapping, touching and holding, sliding, etc. your?nger on the screen. Visit four different world tour environments, each with different beats!

Soon to come is a free update that will offer the app in Spanish, French, German, and Italian– so you can rock out with the Chipmunks all over the world!
