I do a good bit of my shopping online and a large amount of that takes place at Amazon.com. It is for that reason that I made sure to check out each of the iPhone applications that have provided access to Amazon as soon as they were released. Most of them have worked fine but, for the most part, are really little more than a front end for Amazons optimized webpage. As you may have read that changed yesterday when Amazon went and released their own application. It is a winner.

The application is, of course, free. It’s an excellent deal for Amazon since it helps make shopping there even more convenient (as if it were difficult in the first place). The application loads quite fast and, once you put your account information in, provides full access to everything you might want want were you to check out Amazon on a computer. In fact, the application is yet another step toward the iPhone reducing the need to be at your computer at all.

When you tap one of the images for an item the various perspectives that are available on the website load quickly and you can view each one with a simple tap. (Again I have to note that I’m amazed at how quick this application is — there’s very little lag time).

The search field is what you might expect from any iPhone application. The shopping cart immediately brings up anything that you’ve added, as well as those items that you may have saved for later purchase on the main website. The first time I logged in I was surprised to find than a dozen items that I had looked at and clicked "buy later" on the main website showed up immediately.

On the very right of the screen is the "more" tab. It lets you check out your wish list or create a new one. The app also lets you check out all of the information available through "your account", including tracking packages, viewing or changing previous orders, viewing or changing your one click settings were setting up e-mail notifications for the most awesome part of this app — Amazon remembers functionality.

The "Amazon Remembers" function allows you to snap a picture with your iPhone (sorry Touch users) and store the picture on Amazon’s site for later reference. In addition, Amazon’s computers will attempt to locate the item that you’d photographed and provide information on it. How cool is that?

Amazon has created a superb application here and it means only one thing — you’ll never have to use your computer to access Amazon’s website again.

Quick Take

Value:  VERY high
Would I Buy Again:  Absolutely
Learning Curve: Nil
Who is it for:  Anyone who shops at Amazon
What I like:  Great app with an innovative addition to shopping at Amazon
What I Don’t: Nothing

Final Statement:  Thanks to some great apps the iPhone becomes more and more useful!

Read the Developer's Notes:
The Amazon app allows iPhone and iPod touch owners to very quickly search, compare prices, read reviews, and make purchases on Amazon.com using a simple, yet elegant, interface. Amazon customers have full access to their existing cart, wish lists, payment and shipping options, order history, 1-Click(TM) settings, and Prime membership benefits. All purchases made on Amazon Mobile are routed through Amazon’s secure servers just as they are on the web.

The Amazon app also includes a new experimental feature called Amazon Remembers that allows you to use the camera on your iPhone to create a visual list of things you want to remember while out-and-about. The photos you take from the app are stored on both the Amazon Mobile app and Amazon’s website. If the item you want to remember is a product, Amazon Remembers will even try to find an product similar to your photo for sale on the web. If we do, we’ll send you an e-mail alert and post the result along with the photo.

Amazon Mobile is great for:* Buying the sequel to a favorite book while waiting for an appointment* Comparing prices on Amazon and 9000 other merchants to those in the retail store you are visiting* Purchasing and gift wrapping your holiday gifts* Browsing product images and reading customer reviews while on the bus or train* Tracking the status of a recently-placed order when you’re away from your computer* Seeing if Amazon Remembers can find a pair of shoes for sale like the one the person sitting next to you is wearing
