Reviewing the AMC app for the iPhone or iPod Touch is a bit like reviewing the effectiveness of a particular television advertisement. All the app does is show you stuff about AMC and its programming but it doesn’t actually do anything useful.
However, that depends on if you’re a fan of AMC shows. The only one listed that I personally have an interest in is the remake of The Prisoner (which I can only conclude in advance as inferior to the original). However I know many people who are fans of Mad Men and would likely download this free app for that aspect alone.
One aspect of the app that I like is that when you want to watch a video clip, it doesn’t launch a separate app like some do in order to view it. The viewer is built into the app and you don’t have to relaunch the AMC app later.
One aspect that I don’t like is that the clips each have their own advertisements (hello, Clorox). The app is simply a client for AMC material found on the website, such as video clips, blogs and a schedule. It even has a search capability if you want to find all materials related to Jon Hamm.
Overall, the app is unimpressive. It’s a well-built marketing tool but after going through all the material you’ll likely just want to delete it from your device.
Pros: Well built. Doesn’t launch external video-viewer.
Cons: Just a big advertisement, for AMC or other products.
