I love my iPad, but it’s not a Mac. One of the factors that makes this the most obvious is that while you can do most of the things on an iPad as you can on a Mac (write a document, play a game, etc.), you can’t code for the iPad on an actual iPad. iOS is simply not as robust an operating system as Snow Leopard or Lion.
App Cooker gives you the next best thing. You can’t make a good app without a plan for doing so and this app gives all you all the tools you need for design of a good app. The idea has to come from you, but App Cooker lets you flesh out the idea into a feasible model.
Among its tools is a graphic editor to design the icon of the app and the screens for either the iPhone or iPad (the ability to do an app for both will be available in a future release). There is a built-in engine to support switching between portrait and landscape. There is also a notebook for writing down the app’s core ideas and a section for use in the App Store including giving the app categories and sales scenarios for different price points. All this can be exported to a PDF or made into a television presentation.
As a programmer, I do have a wish-list for this app. I wish it would be possible to export the core objects and screens into XCode to start creating. I also wish it were possible to create code snippets. But I don’t think Steve Jobs would allow that. For what it does, it’s quite excellent.
Currently the price of the app is $19.99 and will go up in the future. However, functionality upgrades have been promised that will double the value (and price) of the app so if you feel this app would be useful to you, best to get it early.
