In the early days of the App Store, it was fairly easy to explore apps since there were but a handful of them. But in the four years since its inception (it was launched on July 10, 2008), the number of apps available in the App Store has increased, to say the least. As disclosed by Apple CEO Tim Cook himself during his keynote at the recently concluded WWDC, the App Store now holds more than 650,000 apps. So, you can just imagine how daunting it is to explore all of them now. Fortunately, there are tools that can help you separate the wheat from the chaff as far as iOS apps are concerned. As it happens, these tools are themselves apps. And one such app is AppZapp HD.

Touted as “the bargain guide optimized for your iPad,” AppZapp HD is chiefly concerned with showcasing — what else? — bargain apps. As such, it highlights apps whose prices have recently dropped in a special Sales and Now Free sections. These sections, as well as the many other sections in the app, contain lists that immediately inform you of the apps’ respective App Store and AppZapp community ratings. This way, you can easily figure out which apps deserve your further attention. Tapping an item on a list takes you to the corresponding app’s details page, which includes the app’s description, activity, and other bits of information.

As mentioned in the foregoing paragraph, there is such a thing an AppZapp community. Provided that you’re a registered user, you can interact with other members of the community so as to discover more noteworthy apps. Tightly integrated with the AppZapp’s community feature are the Live Stream and Collections sections. The former lets you peruse an auto-updating list of the activities within the community, including views and likes for certain apps. The latter, for its part, offers a catalog of wide-ranging app collections put together by other users. There’s also a MyAppZapp section that lets you sync the apps on your device with your AppZapp account.

You can easily see the most interesting changes regarding app activity upon opening AppZapp. But if you want to be alerted of them through push notifications, you can unlock the app’s built-in push service via an optional $0.99 in-app purchase. Alternatively, you can enter a valid coupon code to unlock it at no additional cost.

Also available for iPhone as simply AppZapp, AppZapp HD is itself a free download for your iPad. If you’re using a third-generation iPad, you’ll be glad to know that it has Retina display support. If not, you’ll find that it’s a useful app discovery tool nonetheless.
