User Rating:Usually I try to avoid reviewing free apps on the basis that it doesn’t cost the user anything to download and review it themselves, but I’m an Army of Darkness fan so for this I made an exception. In fact, I’m beginning to really appreciate this type of iPhone/iPod Touch application. It is available for several movies for free (Army of Darkness, Fargo, Silence of the Lambs) and some for $.99 (Borat, Rocky). In this case, it’s distributed by MGM Studios, the makers of the original movie, but that’s not the case with every soundboard application. Hopefully in the other cases, the creators are getting re-compensated for their work.
I’m reminded of those keychains one can buy in many novelty stores which use movie, television or character sound clips embedded within the device to impress or disgust your friends. Having these apps is like carrying multiple sound-generating keychains.
In this particular app, you hear Ash (as well as other various undead sorts) in his full glory. Each sound comes with a corresponding image from the movie, and if you’d like, you can display all sounds and images in a slideshow. It’s also possible through the options menu to hide or show the images with each sound and to have a random sound from the movie play when you shake the device.
It’s a time-waster, but it’s a great time-waster. I can only hope that other cult movies release similar soundboard apps in the future. If used correctly, it could also scare the crap out of somebody.
Pros: Oh, come on. It’s Army of Darkness and it’s free.
Cons: Non-fans of Army of Darkness should avoid this one.
