Avoidance Dynamite is a challenging game in which you have the task of guiding a fireball through various industrial settings, avoiding the dynamite crates that litter the levels. Sure, it’s an abstract concept, but so are most of these quirky iPhone games, and that just makes them all the more fun.

Avoidance Dynamite can be played using either the touch-screen or accelerometer to move your precarious protagonist through the levels. I personally found the touch-screen option more playable, but some may prefer the challenge of tilting their way through the game.

Bulking out the game is a star rating system and gold coins to collect on each of the levels. The coins can be used to purchase upgrades such as time extensions and ‘Ice ball’, which prevents your ball from blowing up the second it hits a crate. The star rating, which is based on how quickly you complete the levels, just rewards you with stars, and a general feeling of self-worth and accomplishment.

An area of Avoidance Dynamite that could be worked on is the sound quality, which is limited to a few repetitive explosions and alarm-sounds. Thankfully, the developers accommodate this minor short-coming by allowing you to switch off the sound and listen to your iPod while rolling your way through the increasingly tough levels. You can also catch a breather from the main game by playing the ‘Gladiator Arena’ and ‘Gold Rush’ mini-games.

Avoidance Dynamite wisely features Game Center support, including leaderboards and achievements. As usual, there is nothing for me here as I’m simply not up to the challenge of being particularly good at this game. Nevertheless, Avoidance Dynamite will attract those looking for a game that’s a little tougher than your average iPhone game. Those of you lucky enough to own an iPad even get to play the game in HD quality.
