If you are old like me than you remember the good old days of video games when shops in malls were filled with refrigerator-sized consoles that came with usually only one game. One of them was called "Breakout", which involved volleying a ball with a line (substituting for a paddle) in order to break the bricks of the wall blocking the line. It was a simple yet addicting game at the time.

With Ball Busters, along with the cute double-entendre of a name, the creators tapped into our race memory of "Breakout" by having a similarly addictive game with far superior graphics and more interesting tricks within the app.

For example, instead of bricks, the circles that you have to destroy come with a face whose eyes follow the movement of the ball (and wouldn’t you follow it if contact with it meant your death?). Some of the "faces" take more than one hit to be destroyed. Some of them drop down special abilities which the line has to catch after they’re destroyed. You get the idea.  It keeps the game fresh and interesting.

One of the highlights of the game are the cute play-by-play announcements made by the deep, cartoony voice in the background. This featured can be turned off by those that find it annoying.

It’s very rare that I give a perfect "5", but Ball Buster seems to be doing all the right things. You can play iPod music in the background.  The instructions are simple and clear.  Most of all, it’s fun to play.

Here are some cheat codes you can play around with, courtesy of the creators (enter the code in the options screen off of the main menu):

UnlockAll120 – unlocks all the levels

LockAll – locks all the levels again

Immortal – unlimited lives

Superman – makes all powerups super

BadToTheBone – replaces all bad powerups with good powerups

UltraSpeed – makes the ball go faster than normal

Turtle – makes the ball go slower than normal
