User Rating:I really enjoyed music theory—both in college and in High School–and I enjoy jamming on my guitar. In High School I actually made a set of flash cards to memorise all the scales, chords, and inversions of chords. This made things much easier for me—both in transcribing, and transposing music. But as practice waned along with my memory, I find it harder and harder to keep my scales and chords straight.
Enter BandGeek—somewhere between a dictionary and flash cards, it allows me to quickly look up almost any chord, inversion and scale by flipping through the selector on my iphone. What’s a Diminished D 4-2 chord? Why C-flat, D, F, A-flat of course! And all at my fingertips.
BandGeek is a great reference tool for all levels of playing. Scales, Chords, and Diatonics are all represented. There are also 2 more settings—“Set” and “Frequency” . I’m not sure what these do (I think they are MIDI related) but I’m sure are handy for some people.
But just as a dictionary is not a replacement for vocabulary, BandGeek isn’t a replacement for knowing the scales and modes; but it definitely makes things easier when you need it.
