Baseball Superstars 2012 is an app that impresses. Although intended to be a baseball game as per the title suggests, it comes with feature rich content which includes a slew of mini-games and side quests that will never bore you.

Players begin the game as a newly drafted professional baseball player for a professional team. As the rookie of the team, the player has to work his way up the hierarchy of the team under the watchful eyes of the team manager and coach. Moreover, players will be smothered with both encouragements and snide remarks of teammates, examples including a condescending captain and a very enthusiastic senior. While you start the first season as the baby of the team, you slowly gain recognition and eventually will be tasked to be a role model to newer additions as a veteran. You are also given a choice to be a batter or a pitcher, though I personally find batting much more enjoyable than pitching.

The game is rendered in stunningly clear graphics. Although it uses a cutesy cartoonish format of presentation rather than the 3D realistic models found in most sports games. However, this works just fine too, for it compliments the various features of the game, giving it a somewhat fantasy effect. Features include add-ons that allow the player to slow down the pitcher’s throw, making batting a lot easier. Other things that add to the fantasy effect include super players modeled after various anime characters, who use their super powers to launch difficult shots at you. These include characters like a hunter who pitches with his rifle, and even the god Pluto.

Gameplay itself is easy to learn, albeit a pain to master. Very thorough tutorials teach you everything you have to know, including how to time your shots and what buttons to press afterwards. However, how you put these instructions to use is a different thing altogether. The game allows a great degree of customization, as evident right at the start of the game where you are made to choose your character. You are given the choice on his body type, as well as a slew of other features that will affect game play. As a non-baseball fan, I had no idea what the various in-game terms meant. However, this did not pose much of a problem to me because the game explained everything very well.

Although obviously a baseball game, Baseball Superstars 2012 also comes with other features. This includes the freedom to explore the fictional city the game is set in, giving the player access to a park, a hospital, and a shopping mall amid other things. Examples of non-baseball activities include taking part time jobs in a park to earn cash, which can then be used to purchase upgrades for your character in the mall.

As a free game, Baseball Superstars 2012 is a must-have. While it is perfectly alright to play the game free as it is, exclusive power ups and perks have to be bought through in-app purchases. Such power ups make the progressing much easier and are good to have, but not compulsory. I must say that this is one very well thought out game, for not only does it perform well in its main focus of baseball, but it also has lists of other activities for players to do which are presented magnificently.

Quick Take

Value:High.

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Med. Tutorials are thorough but it is difficult to master.

Who Is It For:All sports fans.

What I Like:The depth of the game. Very feature rich.

What I Don't Like:Add ons are expensive.

Final Statement:Do you have what it takes to be the next superstar?
