User Rating:Angry Birds has become the gameplay formula to emulate on the iPhone format. The concept of catapulting random objects/critters at other random objects/critters shielded by precariously collapsible materials has really taken the smartphone world by storm, and Beaver’s Revenge, launching today, is the latest game to take this approach.
Unlike the dire Balloon Dart which I reviewed some time back, in which you pop balloons with darts, someone actually used their imagination when creating Beaver’s Revenge. The enemies here are woodcutters, who are chopping down your precious forest. It’s your job, Mr. Beaver, to stop them by using your tail to bombard them with various woodland critters.
While Beaver’s Revenge maybe lacks the lovably simple art style of Angry Birds, it certainly has character. There is an amusing variety of creatures to launch, ranging from basic fish, to skunks, to big terrified mooses, all of whom make joyous squeaks and sounds as you catapult them to their doom. The evil woodcutters are certainly more menacing and tougher to take down than the hapless green pig heads of Angry Birds, making them more-than worthy adversaries.
Beaver’s Revenge has an eye-pleasing visual style with detailed backdrops and 3D character models. As a result, the game does tend to slow down a bit when you’re raining woodland hell down on the enemy, but this doesn’t detract too much from the tried-and-tested gameplay formula.
There are several worlds to unlock, star ratings for each level and online leaderboards for you to strive for, making Beaver’s Revenge a solid package, and a worthwhile alternative to those who think Angry Birds has sold out and gone a bit too ‘mainstream’ these days.
